Dear Midwest Statistical Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Midwest Chapter of International Chinese Statistical Association (ICSA), serving local statistics professionals from Academia/Industry for learning and sharing knowledge and experiences, collaborating on solving real problems, and networking for professional growth. The Chapter will cover Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

The Midwest boasts of outstanding statistical programs, including University of Wisconsin, University of Illinois Urbana and Champaign, University of Minnesota, and Purdue University, which produce first class statistical graduates. It’s also the headquarters for many large corporations such as, AbbVie, Eli Lilly and Company, Takeda, Nielsen, Astellas, AllState, Medtronics, P&G, offerring numerous employment opportunities for statisticians.

Such a large population of statistical faculties, students, and professions calls for a forum to share knowledge and promote collaboration. The American Statistical Association local chapters serve this purpose to a limited degree because they are usually too “local” to be effective. Through the ICSA Midwest Chapter that covers a broader base (including 11 states), students will get connected with professionals while in school, find internship opportunities, and network for employment after graduation; professors who are armed with arsenals of statistical theories and methodologies will find research problems from their industry peers; and companies can access and nurture top students early, build their talent pipeline with local universities, and tap into the deep expertise of local universities to solve their real problems.

To fulfill this purpose, the chapter will host an annual Chapter meeting with the 1st one in October this year. It is currently planned to be a 1-day meeting including short courses, presentations, industry job fairs and many networking opportunities. Also possible regular activities include joint seminars with universities, workshops on a particular topic.

Ultimately, the success of the Chapter will rely on every one of us. We are reaching out to each organization, asking you to join the Chapter, volunteering for the Chapter, together building the great statistical forum in the Midwest, and promoting statistics in the heartland of the USA.

More information can be found on the ICSA Midwest website.
